Illinois
vs. Michigan Football!
Nothing says Big Ten football like a trip to Ann Arbor to face the
Michigan Wolverines in the “Big House.” The Fighting Illini are
trying to stay positive after a slow and disappointing start to the
season. A victory against the Wolverines could just be the spark to
get the Fighting Illini back on track. Let’s not forget, it was
about 4 years ago a young Fighting Illini squad stormed into Ann
Arbor and skipped out with a “W.” If Ron Turner can keep his team
poised and not let them be intimidated a raucous crowd, the Fighting
Illini may be able to enter the “Big House” and leave with another
victory.

Illinois
vs. Michigan State Football!
Though the year has been tough, the Fighting Illini look to steady
themselves in Champaign with a victory over Michigan State. These
two have not faced each other since the 2000-2001 season, and the
Fighting Illini suffered a close 14-10 loss. The Fighting Illini
look to revenge the defeat, but that will depend on the play of the
defense. The Fighting Illini are the Big Ten’s leading passing team,
so they can move the ball on the offense. If the defense can stiffen
up and play well, the Fighting Illini should be able to come away
with the home victory.

Illinois vs. Wisconsin Football!
Big Ten football is finally here and the Fightin’ Illini open up
with a great game. The Badgers of Wisconsin travel to Champaign in
hopes of revenging last years 37-20 lost to the Illini in Camp
Randall. Wisconsin boasts two of the best offensive players in the
country with RB Anthony Davis and WR Lee Evans, so the defense will
have to play big. If Illini QB Jon Beutjer and the rest of the
offense are in sync, look for the Illini to start off the Big Ten
season 1-0. Come show your support and wear your orange and blue. Go
Illini!

Illinois
vs. California Football!
This week, the Illini return home from the west coast only to face
another Californian team, the University of California Golden Bears.
The Fightin’ Illini have started off slow again this year, but they
have out-gained every team they faced this year. If the offense can
score some touchdowns and the defense make a couple of big plays,
look for Cal Bears to have a long flight home. For those you
can’t make it to Memorial Stadium for the game, join us in your
orange and blue and show your support for the Illini.

Illinois
vs. UCLA Football! The Illini are
back on the road on Saturday, September 13th, as they travel west to
face the UCLA Bruins. With the site being the Rose Bowl in Pasadena,
Illinois will make a trip to where most Big Ten teams hope to play
on January 1. The Bruins come into this year with a new coach, but a
strong nucleus of 14 returning starters. The Illini will have to
come out strong to be victorious on its first true road test of the
year, but they shall be helped with the support of our west coast
alumni. For those you can’t make it out to Pasadena for the game,
feel free to join us in your
orange and blue!

Illinois
vs. Illinois State Football! Though the
Illini suffered a disappointing loss last week to the Missouri
Tigers, the team looks to bounce back at its home opener this
Saturday against Illinois State. Illinois showed great balance with
freshman running back E.B. Halsey amassing 222 all-purpose yards and
senior quarterback Jon Beutjer throwing for 281 yards. The Illini
defense was solid, holding the Tigers to just 102 passing yards and
223 total yards. Though the Illini were fairly impressive, neither
the offense nor defense was able to make game-breaking plays. With
only the second meeting against Illinois State approaching, the
Illini looked poised to claim dominance in east-central Illinois.

Illinois
vs. Missouri Football! Are you ready
for some Illinois football? The Illini open up the season looking to
gain bragging rights on the gridiron with a battle against the
Missouri Tigers. The second installment of this old rivalry will
have the Illini start the year more settled at the QB position. The
return of Jon Beutjer, one of last year’s Big Ten passing leaders,
and eight defensive starters look to contain Missouri’s sophomore
run-and-gun QB, Brad Smith. Beginning this year with a steady
quarterback and strong defense, the Illini look ready to redeem last
year’s 33-20 loss and claim its right to brag. So let’s kick off the
season by supporting your Illini. Alumni from Missouri will also be
in attendance, so be sure to

Ohio State football game. We will be watching the game at SRO
Sports Bar at the Northwest Mall.
The Ohio State Alumni Club will be in significant
attendance, so we hope to see as many Illini as possible.
Background: Ohio State is one of only two
undefeated Division 1-A teams remaining this season, and their alums
have their sights on a Fiesta Bowl. However, standing between
them and this outcome are our Illini, who have a significant chance
to upset Ohio State this Saturday since: we've won three of our past
four home games (see
http://houstonilliniclub.com/2002_illini_football_schedule.htm),
and one of our recent victories was against Purdue, against whom
Ohio State nearly lost against on Saturday through a turnaround with
less than two minutes remaining. As this Saturday's game is in
Champaign we've got the home field advantage and a victory against
Ohio State (who we defeated in our regular season game last year)
would definitively redeem our season. Contact event organizer
Bob Clayton with any questions.

Ohio State Football! Please plan to
join the Houston Illini Club this Saturday, November 17th with
kickoff at 11:10 A.M., as we watch the Illinois vs. Ohio State
football game at SRO-OT Sportsbar at the Northwest Mall. We will
be sitting alongside the VERY active and numerous Ohio State Alumni
club for this game, so I hope many of you show up to wear orange and
blue and to have a great time!
Houston Illini were outnumbered 3:1 by Penn State
alums at last week's exciting win at the Northwest Mall SRO.
The Ohio State club typically has 50+ in attendance for each game at
SRO's with group cheers, trivia questions, etc. The Illini
club leaders will there playing Oskee Wow Wow and leading ILL-INI,
but we can't be effective without you!!! Get there early with
your orange and blue!
For those of you who haven't been following the
Illini football team this year, Illinois is 8-1 for the first time
since 1983 when the Illini won the Big Ten title with a 9-0
conference mark and took a 10-1 record into the Rose Bowl ... The
Fighting Illini's 5-1 start in Big Ten play is the best since 1993
when they also started conference play 5-1; the Illini were 7-1 in
league play in 1989 .... With the win over No. 15 Purdue, Illinois
broke into the Bowl Championship Series ranking at No. 12, for the
first time in the poll's existence, and with the victory over Penn
State is now ranked No. 10 in the BCS ... Illinois' current
five-game winning streak in Big Ten play is its longest since
winning five in 1989; the Illini won 12 straight conference games
over the 1982, 1983 and 1984 seasons ... This is the latest in the
season that the Illini have been in first place in the Big Ten since
tying for the conference championship in 1990 ... Illinois is 5-0 at
Memorial Stadium in 2001 and is shooting for its first perfect home
mark since 1984 ... Senior quarterback Kurt Kittner is one of five
finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and one of 12
semi-finalists for the Davey O'Brien Award ... And FINALLY in
the 112-year history of Illinois football, the Illini have won nine
games three times (1951, 9-0-1; 1904, 9-2-1; and, 1892, 9-3-2) and
10 games three times (1989, 10-2; 1983, 10-2; and, 1902, 10-2-1.)
For all these reasons, the Illini deserve your recognition this
year.
