HOUSTON ILLINI CLUB

December 21st, at 7:00 p.m.. Come watch as your FIGHTING ILLINI men's
basketball team tries to win the Braggin' Rights game against the Missouri
Tigers for the 6th consecutive year. While Luther Head is hitting big shots
for our Houston Rockets, his former Illinois teammates are putting together
another undefeated pre-conference season.
We will meet at the new Buffalo Wild Wings (BW3) Bar & Grill in Midtown,
510 Gray Street. For

The polls are in! The Houston Illini Club will have a group
outing to see the Astros play the Cubs at Minute Maid Park! By popular
demand, we will go on Sunday, October 2nd at 1:00 p.m.. This is the last
game of the season and Fan Appreciation Day! We bought bullpen box
seats at $21 per person [the tickets are in right field on the first level.]
You can direct any questions to event organizer Derek Harmon. To those
who were unable to pick up their tickets from Derek at the August 25th
event, they will be available either direct from Derek, or at the "Will
Call" window. Again, contact Derek with questions.
NOTE - Sent to all club members 9/21/05: In the
event you were one of the club members who had sent in your check for the
forthcoming October 2nd Astros-Cubs game, and not yet picked up your
tickets, please be advised that event organizer Derek Harmon has them.
He will be out of town until Wednesday, September 28, 2005. At that point,
tickets will be placed by Derek at the Astros "will call" window unless

HOUSTON ILLINI CLUB invites

2 the Fighting Illini football team take on Rutgers from Memorial
Stadium. Illinois has compiled a record of 49-27-4 when
opening the season at home, and as this will be the first meeting
between Illinois and Rutgers on the football field it promises to a
historic game.
HURRICANE KATRINA REFUGEES HELP
REQUESTED! Please bring any canned goods, clothing, or other
donations to the game. Event organizer Derek Harmon will drop
off the donations from our club following the game.
Incidentally, Derek's personal efforts in this collection and in his
volunteering to help the refugees over prior days was cited in
today's communication by the UIAA.

Josef Helfenstein
has been Menil director since January, 2004. He previously was
director of the
Krannert Art Museum
at the University of Illinois and a professor in UI’s School of Art
and Design (2000 – 2004). He is a native of Lucerne,
Switzerland, and holds degrees from the University of Geneva
(Master’s) and University of Bern (Ph.D.). Josef and his wife,
Dorothee Sauter, have two children, ages eleven and fourteen.

Club Open House
&
Recognition of Robert "Doc" Morgan
At the home of the Club's
President, Derek Harmon.
 Please
plan to join the club on Sunday, January 23rd as we honor Robert
"Doc" Morgan, a local alumni club board member and 2003 recipient of
the University of Illinois Alumni Achievement Award, the highest
honor the Illinois Alumni Association bestows on a graduate.
"Doc" received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Illinois in
1974. His previous degrees were from the University of North Texas
in Denton--Bachelor of Music, 1963, and Master of Music, 1965. He
was a teacher and director of jazz studies at Houston's High School
for the Performing and Visual Arts until he retired in 1999, and he
is also an accomplished musician and composer who inspired knowledge
and a deep love for jazz music in his students. Among his awards are
"Teacher of the Year", 1987, from University of North Texas, and
Distinguished Teacher in the Arts Award from the National Foundation
for Advancement in the Arts, 1997. Bob Morgan has also received an
honorary doctor of music degree in 1999 from Berklee College of
Music in Boston. Last week he was inducted into the Hall of Fame by
the International Association for Jazz Education. During the open
house, Bob has graciously consented to play some jazz piano pieces
in between conversation and refreshments. Please RSVP by email to
