Message: ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP BANQUET WITH THE DEAN OF COMMUNICATIONS!

The Houston Illini scholarship is given annually to the top student from our area bound for the University of Illinois. Awarded on the basis of the student’s academic and leadership potential, this year’s scholarship is $2,000, and is supported by each club member's dues.  Please join us at the scholarship banquet to congratulate this year's winner, which will be held on Sunday, May 18th.

We are delighted to announce that our speaker will be Ronald E. Yates, Dean of the College of Media (formerly College of Communications).  Since being named Dean in 2004, Yates has guided the College through several significant changes, including the transition from a 2-year to a 4-year college; doubling of the student population from 550 to more than 1,000; the creation of a $1 million dedicated Student Services Center in the former basement of Gregory Hall complete with four professional advisers, a data and records administrator and a career services staff; and most recently, the name change from College of Communications to College of Media. Currently, the college is the process of creating a new Department of Media and Cinema Studies and is in the concept stage of designing a new building. Yates joined the University of Illinois as Journalism Department Head in 1997 following a distinguished career with the Chicago Tribune as an award-winning foreign correspondent, writer and editor. Dean Yates' topic will be Looking for Trouble: The Wild, Wacky, Wonderful Life of a Foreign Correspondent.
