Toby Kamps has organized solo exhibitions by such diverse artists as Claes
Oldenburg, Ellsworth Kelly, Tim Lee, Vanessa Beecroft, Martin Kersels, Adi
Nes, Michael Queenland, and Torsten Slama. He has supervised several
well-received thematic survey and catalogue projects, including The Old,
Weird America, No Zoning: Artists Engage Houston, and Small World: Dioramas
in Contemporary Art. A graduate of the Williams College Graduate Program in
the History of Art and the Getty Museum Leadership Institute, Kamps has
written on contemporary art and artists for numerous exhibition catalogues
and magazines. Prior to his Menil appointment, Kamps was Senior Curator at
the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; Director of the Institute of
Contemporary Art, Maine College of Art, Portland; and Curator at the Museum
of Contemporary Art San Diego.
Mr. Kamps will no doubt include comments about the two 13th-century
Byzantine frescoes, to be returned by the Menil to the island-republic of
Cyprus in early 2012 (Houston Chronicle and New York Times, Sept. 24, 2011).
Attendees will have an opportunity to see the frescoes in the Menil’s
Byzantine Fresco Chapel, a short walk from the main building.

Nathan has appeared in internationally renowned opera houses such as the
Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Seattle
Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Royal Opera House Covent
Garden, Paris Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Glyndebourne Opera Festival,
Bilboa, and the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. His many roles
include the title roles in Billy Budd, Eugene Onegin, Il Barbiere di
Siviglia, and Hamlet, Guglielmo in Cosí fan tutte, the Count in Le Nozze di
Figaro, Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucetia, Malatesta in Don Pasquale,
Belcore in L'Elisir d'Amore, and Ottone in L'incoronazione di Poppea.
Mr. Gunn was the recipient of the first annual Beverly Sills Artist Award,
and was awarded the Pittsburgh Opera Renaissance Award. He is an alumnus of
the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artists Program and was the winner of
the 1994 Metropolitan Opera National Council Competition. Mr. Gunn is also
an alumnus of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana where he is
currently a professor of voice. He will be appearing at the Houston Grand
Opera from Friday, October 21st through Sunday, November 6th as Figaro
within the HGO's Barber of Seville!

the Chicago Cubs battle the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park
with fellow Illini!!
The Houston Illini Club has reserved a block of one hundred well
placed, and substantially discounted off the normal $41 Field
Box seats for the Tuesday, August 16th evening game between the
Chicago Cubs and the Houston Astros! We encourage you,
your family and guests to join with other Illini for what
promises to be a great game.
CURRENT MEMBERS:
By July 22nd please send your check for $32 (ea.) to the UIAC of
Houston at P.O. Box 542314, Houston, TX 77254. We require
your pre-payment in advance to avoid otherwise onerous ticketing
charges via the club dealing directly with the Astros' group
ticket office. Tickets may be picked up at Minute Maid Park's
will-call window at any time subsequent to August 1st until game
time on August 16th.
NON-MEMBERS: Houston area Illinois alums who are not club
members are welcome to join with other Illini for this event at
$40 per ticket. Naturally, we'd prefer that you enjoy the
group discount via joining the club through completing the on-line
form and
enclosing with your ticket funds your annual dues (i.e. $20
single or $25 couple).
NOTE: On
7/28 the club provided payment for 29 tickets for the game from
payments received by certain club members. Beginning 8/1 and
until the 8/16 game those individuals are eligible to pick-up
their tickets at the "Will Call" window (off Texas Avenue) for

Bob Morgan is a 1974 graduate of UI (Doctor of Musical Arts in
Composition), and is the retired Director of Jazz Studies at
Houston’s High School for Performing and Visual Arts. He has
been a very active and successful freelance jazz/commercial
pianist in the Houston area since the mid-1960s, and is a board
member of the UI Alumni Club/Houston.
Morgan will be subbing for pianist Dr. Kent Byerly, also a UI
alum. The trio will be performing in the lounge area of the
restaurant.

Dr. Kent Byerly is an Illinois native and attended high school at Champaign
Central (’75). He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical
Engineering from UI, and a Ph.D., also in Electrical Engineering from the
University of Colorado. His Illinois academic honors include the Bronze
Tablet (’79) and selection as a James Scholar (’78).
After receiving his doctorate (’90), Byerly enjoyed distinguished careers
with IBM and Lockheed-Martin, the latter position bringing him to the
Houston area. In 1991, he founded the Spacial Acuity consulting firm, which
continues today as a very successful entity with NASA/JSC as major clients.
Dr. Byerly has had numerous articles published, holds some eleven patents,
and is currently working on the development of a magnetic pulse imaging
system for oil, gas and fresh water explorations, among other projects.
In addition to all of above, Kent has somehow found time to be a very
successful jazz/ commercial pianist. He “gigged his way†through UI, and has
been performing at Perry’s/Clear Lake for nineteen years (!). NOTE: Kent’s
wife, Diane, also a Colorado graduate and a NASA engineer, will accompany
him on the 26th.

Da Camera at Discovery Green at a free jazz concert
hosted every Thursday in April, Jazz Appreciation Month. Beginning at 6:30 pm
every Thursday in April the Houston Illini Club's Dr. Robert Morgan
will be curating on behalf of
Da Camera,
and hopes to see a large Illini turn-out.
For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Morgan, for
years he taught Jazz and other subjects at the High School for the
Performing and Visual Arts. Despite retirement he continues to receive
wide acclaim from his
former students and the media.
Bring blankets, lawn chairs. Picnics are welcome
(food, beer and wine are available for purchase at the site; no glass containers or
outside alcoholic beverages.) Wear your orange and blue, and be sure
to introduce yourself to Bob!

University of Illinois Alumni Club of Houston is excited to welcome
The Other Guys to Houston on Saturday, March 19, 2011!
We hope that you, your family and guests join for this unique and fun

Known for their impeccable musicality and unique brand of humor, The Other Guys are the University of
Illinois’ premiere men’s A Cappella group. Since their inception during the
1968-69 school year, The Other Guys
have evolved from an amusing diversion to a popular, high profile,
international traveling group of goodwill ambassadors. The current group
continues to build on a tradition characterized by musicianship, comedic
spontaneity, and time-honored dignity.
The Other Guys perform at over 100 different venues a year, as well as every
Varsity Men’s Glee Club concert. Their resume includes appearing at
Chicago’s United Center, Yankee Stadium, Wrigley Field, New York City’s
famed Gotham Comedy Club, the Broadway production of “Grease,†command
performances in Washington, D.C., Google Headquarters, Lucasfilm Inc., Roger
Ebert’s 10th Annual Film Festival, copious alumni events throughout the
country, and numerous shows in Europe. Experience for yourself what some call the most unique collegiate A Capella group in the world.
The Illinois
Alumni Club has reserved a room upstairs at the Spaghetti Warehouse at
901 Commerce
Street (downtown), with plenty of free parking in the adjoining lot and
on the street. The private dinner buffet is only $19 per person (tax, and gratuity
included), which includes your choice of:

- Spaghetti & Meatballs
- Fettuccini Alfredo
- Chicken Tettrazini
- Grilled Chicken Marinara
Included with your entree are a Fresh Garden Salad, Sourdough Bread, and a
