HOUSTON ILLINI CLUB MARCHING BAND BAND UNIFORM DONATION

The Houston Illini Club wants to make it easier for a Houston-area student to be a member of the university’s beloved marching band.

Spurred by a comment by band director emeritus Gary Smith, board members of the Houston Illini Club unanimously voted to pay the costs for one Houston-area student to belong to the University of Illinois Marching Illini Band. Smith, keynote speaker at the club’s annual scholarship banquet in May, mentioned that each band member must bear the costs of joining the band—which currently amount to $670 a year.

The Marching Illini band leader will choose the Houston-area student to receive the award on the basis of academic achievement and commitment to the band.

The cost for an out-of-state student to attend Illinois ranges from $37,566 to $41,358, according to the university’s website. That figure includes tuition, room and board, and books, but not travel or personal expenses.

The recipient of this award from the Houston Illini Club will be announced this fall.
